Chess takes us to magnificent places, and we can only be grateful for the opportunity. This time, we traveled to a place that looked like it it just came out from a book of fairy-tales. It probably suffices to say that we’re talking about Italy, already known for its rich history and beauty. However, this time we discovered an unknown side (for us) of this magnificent country – the northeast, with its imposing Alps.
We started out Italian chess tour in Ortisei, a town situated in Val Gardena, within the Dolomites. This is a mountain range that is part of the Alps and creates spectacular views. It hosts numerous natural parks and was included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2009.
As you can probably guess, the area is also a perfect destination for ski and nature lovers. The skiing season was obviously over, but the cable railways were still available for those who like to explore the nature and discover its beauty.… Read more
Romania’s 2016 chess champions were recently crowned. The tournament was held between 2 and 10 of April in Baile Olanesti, a mountain resort famous for its thermal springs. People of all ages come here to spend a few peaceful days, away from the haste of the city, and use the therapeutic waters to treat different affections.
Located in the Carpathian Mountains and only a few kilometers away from one of Romania’s numerous national parks, it’s no wonder that the scenery was so green and refreshing. The area is home to many protected species, but perhaps the most accessible reservation for the inexperienced hikers (like ourselves) is the two water-lilies lakes that provide a spectacular view when the white and yellow flowers are in bloom. Unfortunately, we didn’t arrive in their season, but still enjoyed the peacefulness of the place.
The battle for the titles was meant to take place over 9 rounds, but it looked like this year the very early leaders remained on top until the end.… Read more
The Cappelle la Grande Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and attracts hundreds of chess players every year. Besides being a very strong competition, the organizers do their best to make the players feel welcome and maintain a friendly and professional atmosphere.
Cappelle la Grande is a small village situated in the North of France, but with great love for chess. The tournament has reached its 32nd edition and the officials promise that there are many more to come. The playing venue is the spacious Palais des Arts that is adapted to the players’ needs by the team of volunteers who help throughout the whole event.
While all the action takes place in Cappelle, most of the players stay about 15 minutes away in Dunkerque, the main city in the region and third-largest harbor in France. The distance is nothing to worry about, as the organizers have thought about everything.… Read more
As the year is almost coming to an end, so is our competition season. And what better place to play the last tournament of the year than a warm island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea? That being said, we packed our bags once again and headed for Mallorca.
The tournament took place in the tourist resort of Can Picafort, from 15th to 22nd of November. The venue was the 3 star hotel Ferrer Concord, the “oldest” of the Ferrer Hotels group. Situated right across the beach, with pool, jacuzzi and sauna inside the hotel and access to the group’s gym and spa in the Janeiro Ferrer Hotel, we can say that our hosts did everything they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible.
The organizers seem to have thought about everything, as most of the rounds started at 8 o’clock… in the evening! This gave us plenty of time to visit, take some sun and, of course, enjoy the gym and relaxing spa.… Read more
