Spanish Team Championship – Division de Honor

The highest league of the Spanish Team Championship, Division de Honor, took place from 26th of September to 2nd of October in Monzon. The event is famous for the number of strong players it reunites and this year’s edition was no exception.

The tournament venue, Monzon, is a small city in the province of Aragon, very close to the location of another famous tournament we have been writing a lot about, Benasque. An imposing fortress built on top of a hill greets the travelers from a distance, indicating the way to their destination. The Castle of Monzon was built during the tenth century, when the city was still under Muslim occupation. Later on, it was captured by Aragonese forces and in 1143 passed to the Templars, who added more walls and chambers to the castle. King James I of Aragon lived here under Templar protection during his childhood. After the dissolution of the Templars, the castle was captured by the army of James II of Aragon and it continued to maintain garrisons until the nineteenth century.… Read more

Baskaran Adhiban wins Benasque Open!

The 35th edition of Benasque Open has come to an end. It has been a great pleasure to be part of it and it’s definitely one of the tournaments we are going to play again and again. Benasque is a very nice town located in the heart of the Pyrenees and surrounded by the highest peaks in that range. The scenery is breathtaking, as you can imagine, and many chessplayers come prepared for hiking. The organization is no less impressive and, even with such a big number of participants, the organizers make everything they can so that everybody feels comfortable during the tournament.

The fight for the prizes has been intense and the winner decided only in the final round! With a win over GM Maxim Rodshtein, it was Indian GM Adhiban who clinched the sole lead, with 8,5/10. Places 2-7 were shared by a group of players with 8 points, but better tiebreaks had GM Julio Granda and GM Jorge Cori, who completed the podium in this order.… Read more

Benasque Open under way

The 35th edition of the “Villa de Benasque” International Open is taking place between 3 and 11 of July in Benasque, Spain. The event is well known for its strength and the number of participants it attracts every year. This year’s edition has gathered 412 players, among which 34 Grandmasters. Top seed is GM Maxim Rodshtein (2678), followed by GMs Ferenc Berkes (2664), Julio Granda (2652), Baskaran Adhiban (2627), Jorge Cori (2627) and Daniel Naroditsky (2622).

After six rounds, three players are sharing the lead with 5,5 points: GM Julio Granda, GM Sergey Grigoriants and GM Jorge Cori. The fight is tight, as they are followed by no less than 16 players with 5 points. Top encounters of the 7th round are:
