6 Chess Apps for Kids

Very often we get questions about apps kids can use to learn or improve their chess. We were aware of apps to solve puzzles and play chess, but they were not all suitable for kids who are just starting to discover the magic of chess. That being said, we spent the last couple of days having fun and trying some chess apps designed for kids.

Here’s our recommendation:

Chess for Kids. FREE, offers in-app purchases. We found this app that’s offered by chess.com easy to use, with a friendly interface and very useful for kids. They can learn the rules with the short introductory video, solve puzzles in order to sharpen their tactical vision and practice what they’ve learned versus computers of different ratings (from 400 to 2200) or online, against other children.

Coach Jay’s Chess Academy. FREE, offers in-app purchases. The app is structured in 5 levels and teaches kids very important concepts: checkmate, defense, endgame, strategy and tactics.… Read more

Magnus Carlsen wins his 4th Tata Steel tournament


World Champion Magnus Carlsen won this year’s edition of the Tata Steel Masters tournament with 9 points out of 13. After a low start with two draws and and a loss against Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Magnus managed to come back with 6 consecutive victories. Then he maintained his lead by drawing the 3 remaining games. It is also worth mentioning the impressive performances of Maxime Vachier Lagrave, Anish Giri, Wesley So, and Liren Ding, all above 2850!

Ivanchuk and Carlsen share the lead in TATA Steel

We have seen an exciting 7 rounds of the Masters tournament so far, with many surprise results and unexpected turns. Ivanchuk is leading with 5 points, followed by Carlsen, who has the same number of points, but is worse on tie-breaks. After a shaky start, the World Champion has managed to win the last four rounds, showing a great come-back. You can find the standings after seven rounds below:
