Dieppe Chess Festival

The 11th edition of the Dieppe Chess Festival has recently come to an end and we only wish it lasted longer! It is a tournament we enjoy very much, both because of its nice location but also its great organization.

To give you an idea of this place, Dieppe is a nice town located on the coast of the English Channel. It is not only a very good holiday destination, but also a very important port.

According to Wikipedia, it was, until the late 1970s, the first port for banana shipment. In the present days, however, it is well-known as the most attractive destination for fishing the famous Saint-Jacques oysters. As you can imagine, the restaurants are offering a large variety of seafood, from various types of white fish to mussels, snails and oysters. The most common are the mussels, which can be served plain simple or accompanied by different types of French cheese sauces.… Read more

Cappelle La Grande 2015

We have just returned from the 31st edition of Cappelle La Grande. Once again, we must congratulate the organizers and volunteers for their excellent job organizing such a great event with over 500 participants (!). It was great to be part of it. Our performance in the tournament was good. (WIM) Raluca Sgircea had a difficult start, conceding several draws. However she bounced back and finished with 5.5 points out of 9. This was enough to win the 4th place in the women’s section and win a prize.

Women’s section standings:

  1. Ekaterina Atalik – 6
  2. Shiqun Ni – 5.5
  3. Anna Warakomska – 5.5
  4. Raluca Sgircea – 5.5

For myself the tournament went well too. I won 5 games drew 2 and lost 2 against a tough opposition. Performed above my rating and was in the cash prizes so I can’t complain. I could have won one more game but we’ll get to that soon when I analyze the games properly.… Read more

Endgame solution

After black’s move (24… f6), it’s clear that the pawn on h2 is lost. So, what to do? The idea I got was to play against the bishop on h2, which after f4 looks trapped.

The moves I considered here were 25. Ng4 and 25. Nd3. After 25. Ng4, black responds with 25… h5 26. Nf2 – Bxh2 and now, after 27. f4, threatening to trap the bishop, black plays 27… Bg3, trading the bishop or getting it out via h4. As a result, I played 25. Nd3. The game continued with 25… Bxh2 26. f4 – Bg3, wanting to play Bh4 and regrouping his pieces. The position we are looking at is now this:

I continued my idea by playing 27. Kg2 – Bh4 28. Kh3 – g5. Now, taking advantage of the weaknesses black created in his camp and the fact that he can never capture on f4 because of the bishop hanging on h4, I played 29.Read more

Endgame practice

I will start this post by wishing all our readers a Happy New Year and many (chess-related, but not only) accomplishments in the freshly started 2015!

It’s been a while since our last entry, so I’m proposing a light warm up with an endgame that occurred in my game against the bulgarian IM Jordan Ivanov in the last round of Dieppe Open in 2014. I was white and, after trading the last pair of rooks on f1, I got the position in the diagram below:

Black’s move here is obvious – the pawn on h2 is weak and only the knight on e5 is preventing the bishop from capturing it. 24… f6 was played in the game. How should white proceed and what is the correct plan in order to hold a draw?
