Position of the day

Analyzing my own games, I found this interesting position from my game against the Grandmaster Stefan Djuric (Serbia) that we played in the second round of an Open in Nebrodi, Sicily. White has been pressing through the entire game, but I tried to make things as difficult as possible for him. My last move 33…Ra4! is threatening to trade his active rook and ease the pressure on my king. There is plenty to analyze here, if you enjoy studying puzzles or solving middlegame problems here is one for you:

Solution will be posted in a few days. Feel free to comment your thoughts.

6 Chess Apps for Kids

Very often we get questions about apps kids can use to learn or improve their chess. We were aware of apps to solve puzzles and play chess, but they were not all suitable for kids who are just starting to discover the magic of chess. That being said, we spent the last couple of days having fun and trying some chess apps designed for kids.

Here’s our recommendation:

Chess for Kids. FREE, offers in-app purchases. We found this app that’s offered by chess.com easy to use, with a friendly interface and very useful for kids. They can learn the rules with the short introductory video, solve puzzles in order to sharpen their tactical vision and practice what they’ve learned versus computers of different ratings (from 400 to 2200) or online, against other children.

Coach Jay’s Chess Academy. FREE, offers in-app purchases. The app is structured in 5 levels and teaches kids very important concepts: checkmate, defense, endgame, strategy and tactics.… Read more

Our last two articles can be found here:

The Scotch Opening
A short overview of a solid and reliable line for white in the Scotch opening. We chose the four knights variation which always had the reputation of being harmless. However, it seems that the positions arising are fresh and with room for plenty of new ideas. Have a look yourself.

The Chess Principles
For beginners and not only beginners, the chess principles of chess are hardly unbreakable. In this article we have a look at the most relevant principles of the opening and we add recent examples of how these rules are not always obeyed ending in a awful result. Enjoy!!

Romanian Team Championship

Not long ago, Romania has crowned its team champions, both in open and women sections. The tournaments started on 3rd of October in the famous Romanian beach resort, Mamaia.

Known for its great parties and the big sandy beaches, Mamaia has turned into the most popular touristic destination and can become, at times, overcrowded. Starting from May, when the sun starts chasing the cold away, the tourists rush to the seaside to enjoy the beach, the parties, the annual carnival (inspired from the Rio one), have a ride over the city in the cable car or just spend a fun day in the Aqua Park.

However, we arrived to an almost empty (that did become completely empty until the end) and tranquil Mamaia thanks to the extra season, which created the perfect conditions for playing chess.

In the men section, AEM Luxten Timisoara started out as favorites with an average rating of 2582, followed by Clubul de Sah al Municipiului Baia Mare (2572) and Medicina Timisoara (2562).… Read more
